Technology manifested through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has had an overwhelming impact on the culture and lives of many people in the past decade and in years to come the impact of technology will be hard to neglect even to those who view technology as irrelevant in their daily activities because technology has the potential to offer life altering information.

Throughout the world communities are becoming smarter by extracting social and economic benefits from electronic networks and the Internet which are creating new opportunities and values that are transforming the way the communities live, work and grows.

This website acts as community portal and involves a wide range of services being delivered or directed through a single point. The word "portal" as applied to the Internet is a new term that is generally synonymous with gateway. As the name implies, it is something one passes through to get to a desired destination. This distinguishes it from a website which is the destination. Another way of thinking about this is to say that portals, point users to content while websites actually offer that content.

This website is the first step in raising awareness on the need to bridge the digital divide among the Kalenjin community. This portal will have the ability to guide it's users into all facets of a community's organizations, activities, assets, events, culture and its people, thus making it unique and distinguishable from other business based portals by the following characteristics:

1. The portal will be like a window into suites of related information and services representing points of view that are shaped by geography or location of the people.
2. It will be a jumping-off point for the content of numerous institutions and organizations in a community.

3. It will go beyond local government information and services to facilitate the collection and presentation of information from every significant group in the community including local organizations, churches, schools, health-care institutions, businesses and service providers.

4. It will be a citizen- centered and customizable solution, so that users can define the information they want to see when they access the portal. They are organized in a way that makes sense to users and reflects their life experiences.
5. Iit acts as 'digital front door:' where citizens use it to go out into the world, and the world uses it to access the community. In this way, they enable communities to take their place in the global information economy.

The website is built in a collaborative effort leading to a larger Community Information Portal (CIP) initiative whose sole objective is to aggregate information relevant in the promotion or improvement of livelihoods of the communities living in the Rift Valley and the entire western part of Kenya.
